SEC Pushes for ESG Adoption Amidst Growing Investor Interest
By Patience Ikpeme
The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is leading the charge for increased adoption of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles in Nigeria’s business landscape.
Dr. Emomotimi Agama, Director-General of the SEC, emphasized the crucial role of ESG in driving sustainable development during a recent regional training programme in Angola. He highlighted the growing recognition of ESG principles among investors and stakeholders as a key factor in evaluating a company’s operations and impact.
Nigeria, facing significant environmental challenges such as pollution, deforestation, and erosion, is increasingly prioritizing sustainable practices. Companies are responding by investing in renewable energy, implementing water conservation measures, and adopting eco-friendly manufacturing processes.
On the social front, businesses are focusing on community engagement, labour rights, and diversity. Inclusive workplaces and corporate social responsibility initiatives are becoming essential components of corporate strategy.
To bolster transparency and accountability, Nigerian companies are enhancing their corporate governance structures and adhering to regulatory requirements.
The SEC has taken proactive steps by issuing guidelines for sustainability disclosures, requiring listed companies to integrate ESG considerations into their operations. These guidelines aim to stimulate a resilient and sustainable capital market while improving corporate governance practices.
Agama acknowledged the challenges hindering widespread ESG adoption in Africa, including limited awareness, capacity constraints, and varying regulatory environments. However, he emphasized the opportunities for capacity building, knowledge sharing, and collaboration among stakeholders to overcome these hurdles.
By prioritizing ESG, Nigeria can position itself as a responsible and attractive investment destination, attracting sustainable investments and contributing to global efforts to combat climate change and promote social equity.
