By Patience Ikpeme
In a recent interactive session with chief executive officers in the telecommunications industry, Dr. Aminu Maida, the Executive Vice Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), emphasized the non-negotiable nature of quality service in the sector. Maida called for industry collaboration to achieve this goal and expressed his commitment to transparency in the telecom ecosystem.
During the session, Maida highlighted the important role of industry leaders in building upon the achievements already made in the telecommunications sector, a key enabler of Nigeria’s digital economy. He emphasized that telecom services are often taken for granted and compared to utilities like water and electricity, with people expecting them to work without fully understanding the complexities involved. Maida stressed the need for industry players to come together and deliver value to the customers.
Maida also discussed the importance of compliance with industry regulations and standards. He stated that compliance would be a key area of focus, with a more urgent approach to ensure industry-wide adherence. He emphasized the need for the telecom sector to set the benchmark for excellence, encouraging others to strive for the same level of quality.
In addressing the issue of broadband, Maida acknowledged that there is much to be done in a short period of time. He mentioned the ongoing efforts of the Infrastructure Company (InfraCo) licensing but emphasized the need to review and reimagine the approach to broadband expansion. Maida expressed the need to increase investment and explore alternative strategies to extend coverage to more states.
Maida’s focus on consultation and engagement with industry CEOs was well-received by the telecom community. Tony Emoekpere, President of the Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON), praised Maida for convening the interactive session and expressed confidence in his leadership. Gbenga Adebayo, Chairman of the Association of Licensed Telecoms Operators of Nigeria (ALTON), also commended the session for providing a platform to discuss industry issues and expressed optimism about Maida’s approach.
The interactive session with industry CEOs showcased Maida’s determination to improve the telecommunications sector. His call for collaboration, compliance, and increased investment in broadband reflects his commitment to deliver exceptional services to both shareholders and the Nigerian public. With his consultative and transparent approach, Maida is poised to lead the NCC in driving the industry forward and furthering Nigeria’s digital transformation.
