The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), has assured Nigeria’s telecommunications networks and other businesses of a tax administration that is friendly, customer-centric, and supportive of growth.
his declaration was made during a visit by the Chief Executive Officer of MTN Nigeria Plc, Mr Karl Toriola, and his management team to the Revenue House in Abuja on Tuesday.
According to a statement by Dare Adekanmbi, Special Adviser on Media to the FIRS chairman, the FIRS Executive Chairman Dr. Zacch Adedeji highlighted the ongoing restructuring at the agency as being aimed at creating a one-stop shop for taxpayers based on their turnover thresholds.
This measure he said is intended to simplify the payment of taxes for companies like MTN Nigeria Plc, which falls under the large taxpayers group with a turnover of N5 billion and above.
Dr Adedeji emphasized the importance of providing a seamless experience for taxpayers, where they can pay all their taxes, including Company Income Tax and VAT, in one place and have audit-related issues addressed.
He also mentioned that the restructuring has eliminated the issue of receiving multiple letters from various units within FIRS for the same matter.
Using a tree-fruit metaphor to illustrate the relationship between FIRS and taxpayers, Dr Adedeji reiterated the agency’s commitment to supporting businesses and ensuring they thrive and bear more fruits. He encouraged businesses like MTN Nigeria Plc to reach out for clarification on any policies or operations they are not familiar with.
In response, Mr Karl Toriola, CEO of MTN Nigeria Plc, pledged the company’s support towards the initiatives of the Federal Government and FIRS to increase tax revenue. He expressed MTN’s commitment to paying taxes on time and being a partner in the country’s economic development.
Toriola highlighted MTN’s presence in every local government in Nigeria and its impact on the lives of Nigerians. He also mentioned the company’s recognition for compliance and diligence in tax payment over the years. Toriola assured FIRS of MTN’s willingness to show flexibility and support various initiatives to help the economy grow.
