NAICOM, NDPC Set to Strengthen Data Protection in Insurance Sector

The National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) and the Nigerian Data Protection Commission (NDPC) have joined forces to enhance data protection within the insurance industry.
The two regulatory bodies signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Friday to collaborate on various initiatives aimed at safeguarding the personal data of insurance policyholders.
The MoU outlines several key objectives, including: providing training programmes to enhance awareness and skills in data protection among insurance industry professionals; setting up specialized clinics to address data protection concerns and provide guidance to insurance companies; regularly monitoring and enforcing compliance with data protection regulations; educating insurance companies on the importance of data protection and best practices and creating specialized guidelines tailored to the insurance industry to ensure effective data protection practices.
To ensure the successful implementation of the MoU, an Implementation Committee has been formed. This committee, comprising representatives from both agencies and key industry associations like the Nigerian Insurers Association (NIA) and the Nigerian Council of Registered Insurance Brokers (NCRIB), will oversee the progress and provide guidance.
This collaboration between NAICOM and NDPC signifies a significant step towards strengthening data protection within the insurance sector. By working together, the two agencies aim to build trust between insurance companies and their customers, ensuring the confidentiality and security of personal data.
