The KB Klub at the College of Medicine, University of Lagos (UNILAG), in partnership with the Oba Saheed Elegushi Foundation, has hosted Lagos State’s largest blood donation drive, raising over 500 pints of blood and spreading awareness across six local government areas (LGAs).

The event, themed “Your Power to Gift Life 2.0,” was a powerful advocacy movement aimed at educating and inspiring the public to embrace the culture of voluntary blood donation.

The campaign took place simultaneously across six locations: Eti-Osa (Monarch Event Centre), Lagos Island (Tinubu Square), Surulere (Teslim Balogun Stadium), Lagos Mainland (UNILAG Indoor Sports Centre), Ikeja (Jara Mall), and Ikorodu (Ikorodu General Hospital). To amplify the message, the KB Klub conducted publicity walks in these communities, engaging local residents and mobilizing both offline and online participation, which reached over 1 million people.

The flagship event in Eti-Osa was officially flagged off by His Royal Majesty, Oba Alayeluwa Saheed Ademola Elegushi, the Elegushi of Ikate-Elegushi Kingdom. His presence brought a royal touch to the event and showed the importance of community leadership in public health. Other distinguished guests included Dr. Bodunrin Osikomaiya, Executive Secretary of the Lagos State Blood Transfusion Service (LSBTS), and Professor Ademola Oremosu, Provost of the College of Medicine at UNILAG.

The event brought together government agencies, health institutions, and civil society to tackle the urgent need for blood donation. The leadership of the KB Klub, including Project Lead Sheriffdeen Oloyede, President Ayobami Olomiyete, and Immediate Past President Mustapha Madehin, was crucial to the success of the initiative, which built on the momentum from the club’s 2023 drive that raised 402 pints in seven hours.

While raising over 500 pints of blood is a significant achievement, the true accomplishment lies in the movement that has been created. The KB Klub said the campaign continues to emphasize the importance of consistent voluntary donation and positions the club as a youth-led force for positive change.

The success of the event serves as a testament to the power of publicity and partnerships in driving public health outcomes. The club has once again shown how the younger generation can lead transformative initiatives that have a lasting impact on communities. The focus now shifts to ensuring that voluntary blood donation becomes an integral part of Lagos’s public health culture.
