Tinubu Extends Customs CG Adeniyi’s Tenure by Six Months
By Patience Ikpeme
President Bola Tinubu has approved a final six-month tenure extension for Comptroller General of Customs Adewale Adeniyi.
The extension effective until February 2027 is intended to allow Adeniyi to consolidate implementation of the National Single Window, a digital trade facilitation system aimed at speeding customs clearance and improving revenue collection.
The move also gives the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) time to manage leadership changes without disrupting operations.
During the extension period Adeniyi will work with the NCS Board to ensure an orderly succession, including promotion of eligible officers to the rank of Comptroller of Customs.
The administration has emphasized that these personnel moves are part of efforts to strengthen internal capacity ahead of the next substantive appointment.
The tenure grant follows a prior extension that would have kept Adeniyi in office until August 1, 2026; the new six-month window effectively extends his service through February 2027.
Officials described the timeline as necessary to complete key reforms and handover procedures tied to the National Single Window rollout.
Adeniyi’s career at the Customs Service began after he graduated from Obafemi Awolowo University in the late 1980s. He progressed through multiple ranks . Deputy Comptroller in 2012, Comptroller in 2017, Assistant Comptroller General in 2020, and Acting Deputy Comptroller-General in January 2023 before his appointment as Comptroller General by President Tinubu in June 2023.
The NCS has also been directed to implement compulsory retirement for officers who have reached 60 years of age or completed 35 years of service, measures intended to refresh the service’s leadership pipeline while maintaining stability during the National Single Window transition.
