Customs, NRS Train Officers on New Tax Reforms to Boost Compliance

The Nigeria Customs Service, in collaboration with the Nigeria Revenue Service, has organised a two‑day training programme for customs officers to ensure staff are fully informed and compliant with the recent federal tax reforms.
Declaring the programme open, DCG Kikelomo Adeola, Deputy Comptroller‑General in charge of Finance, Administration and Technical Services, said the training was necessary because of changes in the nation’s tax administration. “As a Service entrusted with a critical role in national revenue generation, we must remain abreast of evolving tax policies and ensure strict compliance with our statutory obligations,” she said.
“This training is designed to equip our officers with the requisite knowledge to navigate the new tax regime effectively and uphold the highest standards of professionalism and accountability.”
Adeola added that the Service is committed to transparency and national development: “Tax compliance is not merely a statutory requirement; it is a reflection of our commitment to transparency, accountability, and national development.
By investing in the capacity of our personnel, we are positioning the Service to adapt seamlessly to emerging fiscal reforms while sustaining public confidence in our operations.”
Victoria Udo, Assistant Director of Tax at the Nigeria Revenue Service, emphasised the importance of PAYE in revenue collection and the wider benefits of compliance. “Pay‑As‑You‑Earn remains one of the most reliable mechanisms for collecting personal income tax,” she said, noting that compliance also grants access to tax clearance certificates and other financial opportunities.
Udo urged participants to engage actively: “Ask questions and share experiences — a better understanding of the new tax laws will enhance the efficiency with which you discharge your responsibilities.”
The workshop drew members of the Customs Management Team, comptrollers, superintendents and junior cadres, reflecting the Service’s effort to cascade technical knowledge across ranks as it implements the updated tax framework.
