NCC Simplifies Telecom Tariffs to Enhance Consumer Experience
By Patience Ikpeme
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has launched a new initiative to simplify telecom tariff plans, aiming to make it easier for consumers to understand and choose plans that meet their needs.
This move is expected to address the challenge posed by numerous tariff options and promotional offers that often lead to confusion for users.
Ikechukwu Adinde, NCC’s Director of the Consumer Affairs Bureau, shared this development during a training session for journalists at the Digital Bridge Institute (DBI) in Oshodi, Lagos, on Thursday.
“The current tariff structure, with multiple promotions and add-ons, creates uncertainty for consumers,” Adinde explained. “Our goal is to simplify the process, making it easier for consumers to choose plans that suit their needs.”
Data collected by the NCC reveals that major telecom operators have an extensive range of plans. One operator offers 14 different voice plans and 145 data plans, while another has 27 voice plans and 41 data options. According to Adinde, this level of complexity can overwhelm consumers, reducing their satisfaction with telecom services.
To tackle this, the NCC will reduce the number of available tariff plans to a maximum of seven per telecom operator, bringing clarity and making it easier for consumers to make informed choices.
Adinde also addressed the issue of data depletion, explaining that there is a connection between data usage and the type of tariff plans consumers select. The NCC has launched awareness campaigns to educate consumers on how to manage their data usage, particularly on smartphones.
“Our initiatives include publishing approved tariff plans on our website to ensure transparency and educate consumers on data management,” he said.
Adinde advised consumers to monitor their data usage by checking which apps consume the most data and adjusting phone settings accordingly to optimize usage.
The NCC’s efforts are aimed at enhancing the consumer experience, promoting transparency, and simplifying the telecommunications market, ensuring that consumers can make better-informed decisions about their telecom services.
