The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has commissioned a landmark e-health project at the State Specialist Hospital in Akure, Ondo State.

The facility underscores the country’s drive to harness digital technology in transforming public healthcare delivery. Speaking at the event, the Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Dr. Aminu Maida, described the project as a significant step in integrating the health sector into Nigeria’s fast-growing digital economy.

“This commissioning is a clear demonstration of our collective resolve to use information and communication technology to improve and revolutionise healthcare in Nigeria,” said Maida during the ceremony. “The benefits are two-fold—enhancing healthcare delivery through digital tools and ensuring that a healthier population contributes meaningfully to the digital economy.”

The project, completed in partnership with technology providers and government stakeholders, equips the State Specialist Hospital with digital infrastructure designed to streamline patient care, enhance medical diagnostics, and simplify health records management. It forms part of a broader national push to digitise public services and reduce the rural-urban divide in healthcare access.

With the introduction of this platform, health professionals at the Akure facility will now be able to deliver faster and more accurate diagnoses and treatment plans, improving patient outcomes and operational efficiency.

“This goes far beyond the walls of this hospital,” Maida said. “It sets a precedent for what is possible when innovation, collaboration, and purpose-driven investment meet. We are confident this model can be replicated across the country.”

He noted that the success of the initiative hinged on the input of a diverse set of stakeholders—from government partners to technical experts—and praised their collective commitment to a project he said represents “the future of inclusive, technology-driven healthcare in Nigeria.”

The NCC, which has long championed Nigeria’s digital transformation, says it will continue to invest in e-health innovations as part of its mission to promote ICT applications across sectors.

“The success of this e-health project is a testament to what can be achieved through strategic collaboration,” Maida concluded. “We look forward to scaling similar initiatives nationwide.”

The event was attended by state officials, healthcare professionals, ICT stakeholders, and members of the local community.
