The Midstream and Downstream Gas Infrastructure Fund (MDGIF) has concluded discussions with leading Chinese manufacturer, Endurance Group, to deploy 500 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) refuelling stations across Nigeria within the next three years.

Speaking with journalists after the meeting in Abuja, the Executive Director of MDGIF, Mr. Oluwole Adama, said the engagement centred on creating a government-backed Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) to drive the ambitious rollout. According to him, the SPV will be promoted by MDGIF, the Bank of Industry (BOI), Endurance Group and Séquor Investment Partners.

Adama said the collaboration is aimed at accelerating Nigeria’s shift to cleaner fuels by closing critical infrastructure gaps along the CNG value chain. “Under this agreement, we will set up the Compressed Natural Gas Auto Mobility Infrastructure Company (CAM InfraCo), which will be used to deploy 500 integrated CNG refuelling stations, develop LCNG gas supply infrastructure, and provide CNG and LNG transportation trucks with truck-mounted cascades, forming a virtual pipeline across all states nationwide,” he stated.

He explained that the project would significantly reduce the long queues currently witnessed at existing CNG stations. The planned expansion, he said, will increase access to refuelling points and ensure steady supply through improved logistics and distribution systems.

Also addressing the press, the Senior Special Adviser to the President on Special Duties and Domestic Affairs, Mr. Oluwatoyin Subair, said the initiative aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s vision of strengthening energy security. According to him, the administration is committed to deepening the adoption of auto CNG and cutting reliance on Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) and Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), particularly in the transport sector.

Subair added that the programme supports the wider economic reforms of the present administration. “This initiative promotes cleaner and more affordable energy alternatives for Nigerians, while creating new employment opportunities within the domestic gas value chain,” he said.

In his remarks, the CEO of Endurance Group, Mr. Eric Lin, explained that the SPV will establish a nationwide CNG refuelling, maintenance and logistics ecosystem by leasing CNG-related equipment to certified operators. He noted that the company will ensure a reliable gas supply through a virtual pipeline network built to global standards.

CAM InfraCo’s leasing and logistics model, Lin added, is designed to deliver a commercially viable and resilient national CNG network. The strategy involves moving CNG from strategically located mother stations into underserved northern corridors and fast-growing southern clusters, while leveraging existing hubs and upcoming infrastructure for sustainable and cost-effective expansion across the country.
