ICPC Clarifies Misleading Headline on Anti-Corruption Efforts

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has condemned being called a “Toothless Bulldog”.
The Commission said that it is actively pursuing numerous cases of corruption in various states of the Federation, showcasing its steadfast dedication to eradicating corruption at all levels of society.
A significant ongoing legal proceeding highlighted by the ICPC is a N22 million contract scam currently under litigation at the Federal High Court in Makurdi, Benue State. This case, the Commission insisted underscores its proactive approach to addressing corruption and malfeasance.
Furthermore, the ICPC disclosed that it is handling various cases in federal high courts situated in Abuja, Plateau, Katsina, Kaduna, Jigawa, Bauchi, and Nasarawa States, illustrating the breadth and depth of its operations in combating corruption nationwide.
According to the statement “as Nigeria’s premier anti-corruption agency, the ICPC operates with integrity, transparency, and accountability as its core principles”.
The Commission expressed disappointment over the publication of unsubstantiated claims by Vanguard Newspaper without verifying facts with the ICPC or checking with any courts of record.
The ICPC reiterated its commitment to conducting thorough investigations into alleged infractions by members of the political class, including Senators and members of the House of Representatives, particularly concerning the execution of FG-funded constituency projects. This initiative aims to foster accountability and ethical conduct in public service.
The Commission urged media organizations to adhere to professional journalistic standards by verifying information before dissemination.
Additionally, the ICPC emphasized its focus on ensuring proper execution and value for money on government-funded projects, with over 200 contractors compelled to return to complete long-abandoned projects. Recoveries in cash and assets between 2019-2022 amount to billions of naira.
In the interest of transparency, the ICPC disclosed that the Chairman of the Commission will soon address the media to provide further insights into ICPC’s operational activities regarding its anti-corruption initiatives.
“It should be noted that the results of Phase 6 of ICPC projects tracking/CEPTi, which is substantial in value, are ready and include detailed analysis of the 2024 Budget” the statement read.
In conclusion, the ICPC emphasized its significant contributions to delivering good governance, fostering beneficial public ethics, and recovering trillions of Naira for the Federal Government.
