The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has announced an extension of tax office operations to weekends throughout the month of June.

This directive, issued by FIRS Chairman Zacch Adedeji, is designed to assist companies in meeting the June 30 deadline for filing their annual tax returns.

According to a statement by Dare Adekanmbi, Special Adviser on Media to the FIRS Chairman, under the new arrangement, tax offices will open for business from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturdays and from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Sundays. This weekend service began on June 14 and will conclude on Sunday, June 29.

Following Mr. Adedeji’s approval, the decision was communicated to all tax office staff by the Coordinating Directors of the Large Taxpayers Group (LTG), Ms. Amina Ado; the Government and Medium Taxpayers Group (GMTG), Dr. Dick Irri; and the Emerging Taxpayers Group (ETG), Mr. Kabir Abba.

A joint directive from the three Coordinating Directors explained the rationale: “As you are aware, the month of June marks the peak of the annual Companies Income Tax (CIT) filling season, with many taxpayers whose financial year ends 31st December expected to file their tax returns by June 30.

To ease the process for taxpayers, enhance service delivery, and maximize tax collection during this critical period, management has approved extension of tax office operations to weekends for the month of June 2025.”

Since assuming office, the FIRS chairman has reorganized tax operations to simplify tax payment, transforming the agency from solely a tax-collecting entity into a service-providing body. This current extension of hours aligns with that service-oriented approach.
