The Federal Government has inaugurated 50 newly appointed Tax Appeal Commissioners.

The inauguration, which took place in Abuja on Wednesday, is a key component of the government’s broader tax reform agenda designed to generate increased funds for critical sectors such as infrastructure, healthcare, and education.

The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, presided over the ceremony, emphasizing the vital role of the Tax Appeal Commissioners in supporting the administration’s economic reforms and enhancing revenue generation.

He stressed the importance of the Tax Appeal Tribunal (TAT) in ensuring the fair and efficient resolution of tax disputes, a crucial factor in attracting investment and creating a conducive business environment.

Edun underscored the necessity of curbing tax evasion to maintain the integrity of Nigeria’s tax system and adequately fund national development. “While tax avoidance remains legal, tax evasion must be curtailed to ensure the integrity of Nigeria’s tax system,” he stated.

The Minister also highlighted the country’s improving economic indicators, including stabilizing inflation, declining food prices, and increased oil production. He attributed these positive developments to the progress of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which aims to steer Nigeria towards sustainable growth, job creation, and poverty reduction.

Earlier, the Minister of State for Finance, Dr. Doris Uzoka-Anite, described the Tribunal as “a key mechanism in the tax system, balancing the interest of government in revenue generation and ensuring that taxpayers’ rights are protected.” She urged the members of the TAT to leverage their extensive experience to achieve the government’s policy objectives.

Responding on behalf of the newly inaugurated Commissioners, the Chairman of the Tax Appeal Tribunal, Mr. Aderibigbe Adedeji, assured the Minister of their commitment to diligently discharge their duties, drawing on their wealth of experience. He expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for the opportunity to serve the nation in this capacity.

The inauguration of these Tax Appeal Commissioners marks a significant step towards a more robust and efficient tax administration in Nigeria. This initiative is expected to streamline tax dispute resolution, promote compliance, and ultimately contribute to increased revenue generation and sustainable economic growth.

The government’s focus on strengthening institutions like the TAT demonstrates its commitment to creating a fair and transparent tax system that supports national development priorities.
