Chevening Scholarship Applications Open for Nigerian Future Leaders
By Patience Ikpeme
Applications are now open for the Chevening Scholarship programme, the United Kingdom government’s flagship global scholarship scheme that offers fully funded one-year master’s degree programmes at leading UK universities.
The application window runs from August 5 to October 7, 2025, offering an opportunity for aspiring Nigerian leaders and change-makers to study in the UK.
Funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), the Chevening Scholarship is targeted at individuals who demonstrate the capacity to lead, influence, and create positive change in their home countries and on the global stage. Since its inception in 1983, the programme has supported over 60,000 professionals from around the world to advance their careers, and continues to serve as a testament to the UK’s commitment to nurturing the next generation of global leaders.
According to Emma Hennessey, Head of the Scholarships Unit at the FCDO, the Chevening selection process is deliberately rigorous to ensure that the most promising individuals are chosen.
“Chevening’s highly competitive selection process ensures that those chosen to become Chevening Scholars or Fellows represent the brightest and most driven individuals from around the world,” Hennessey said.
She explained that the programme equips scholars with world-class education, international networks, and the confidence to return to their home countries and create lasting impact.
“Chevening Alumni use their world-class education, global networks, and confidence gained in the UK to create meaningful, lasting change when they return home, whether by tackling global challenges or making a tangible impact in their own communities,” she added.
She advised prospective applicants to be prepared to provide strong, evidence-based examples of leadership, influence, and networking skills, and encouraged those who may not yet feel ready to take time to build relevant experiences.
British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Richard Montgomery, also weighed in on the opportunity the scholarship presents to young Nigerians.
“Chevening is more than a scholarship – it is a gateway to a global network of leaders, innovators, and changemakers. Whether your aspirations lie in shaping public policy, launching a business, or addressing the world’s most pressing challenges, the Chevening Scholarship offers a unique opportunity to pursue a fully funded master’s degree in the United Kingdom to advance your knowledge and skills,” Montgomery said.
He noted that while there is no single profile of a Chevening Scholar, candidates must show the drive, vision, and potential to contribute meaningfully to Nigeria’s development and beyond.
“While there is no ‘typical’ scholar, we seek individuals with the passion, ideas, and influence to drive meaningful change in Nigeria and beyond. Our alumni network includes dynamic professionals across diverse sectors who are making significant contributions in their fields,” the High Commissioner added.
Montgomery encouraged qualified Nigerians to submit their applications before the 7 October 2025 deadline, describing the scholarship as a “life-changing experience” for those selected.
Interested candidates can submit their applications through the official website at chevening.org/apply. Applicants are strongly encouraged to consult the guidance materials at chevening.org/guidance to understand the eligibility requirements and ensure they are ready to present a competitive application.
The Chevening Scholarship has remained a symbol of academic excellence, global citizenship, and leadership development for over four decades. With each cohort, it continues to connect outstanding individuals with the resources, skills, and networks to build a better future for their countries and communities.
