CBN Approves JPMorgan’s Plan to Open Merchant Bank in Nigeria
By Patience Ikpeme
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has given JPMorgan, one of the biggest financial institutions in the world, approval-in-principle to set up a merchant bank in the country. The bank will be called JPMorgan Merchant Bank Nigeria Limited.
The approval is a major step for Nigeria’s financial sector. It shows that international financial firms are taking a growing interest in the country’s financial markets and its long-term economic future.
Michael Akuka, Director of Corporate Communications and Investor Relations Department at the CBN, announced the approval. He said it comes at a time when the central bank is carrying out reforms to make the financial system more stable, build more confidence in the markets and link Nigeria more closely to global capital markets.
Mr Akuka said the approval follows the successful completion of the banking sector recapitalisation exercise, which has made Nigerian banks stronger and better able to withstand shocks. It also fits into the wider reform plan of the CBN under Governor Olayemi Cardoso, which aims to keep the financial system stable, grow the financial markets and win back the trust of foreign investors.
Speaking on the reforms, Mr Cardoso said: “Our objective is to build a financial system that is stable, competitive and internationally connected, one that commands confidence and can effectively support investment and economic growth.”
He added: “We are encouraged by the growing interest of international financial institutions in Nigeria. Our focus remains on sustaining the reforms, strengthening the credibility of our markets and creating an environment in which both domestic and international institutions can participate and thrive.”
Mr Akuka made it clear that approval-in-principle is only the first stage of the approval process and is not a final banking licence. Before JPMorgan Merchant Bank Nigeria Limited can start business, it must meet all the rules set by the regulators. These include registering the company with the Corporate Affairs Commission and completing all the necessary operational and regulatory arrangements. The bank can begin operations only after the CBN issues it a final licence.
The CBN has also approved the people who will lead the proposed bank. Mr Adedapo Adedayo Olagunju has been cleared as Managing Director. Latter Kevin George, Nzelu Chinedum Izunwanne and Syed Gabriel Murtaza have been approved as Non-Executive Directors. Alade Sarah Omotunde, Ajayi Olukonyinsola and Adetu Seni have been approved as Independent Non-Executive Directors.
A merchant bank usually deals with larger businesses and institutions rather than ordinary account holders. Such banks help companies raise money, advise on mergers and investments, and handle large financial deals. If JPMorgan completes the remaining steps, its presence could bring more investment and fresh expertise to Nigeria’s financial markets.
The CBN said it remains committed to a sound, competitive and internationally connected financial system that supports lasting economic growth and increases Nigeria’s role in global financial markets.
