Nigeria’s Foreign Reserves Reach 17-Year High Above $52.5bn

Nigeria’s foreign reserves have surpassed their full-year target, climbing above $52.5 billion as of July 17, 2026, marking a 17-year high for the nation’s external financial buffers.
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) attributed the growth in foreign reserves to renewed investor confidence and sustained capital inflows, stating that ongoing economic reforms continue to restore stability across the country’s financial system.
Delivering the opening remarks of CBN Governor, Mr. Yemi Cardoso, at the CBN Fair held at the International Conference Centre in Gombe, the Acting Director of Corporate Communications and Investor Relations Department, Mrs. Hakama Sidi Ali, explained that the upward trajectory was driven by sustained foreign exchange inflows and renewed investor participation across multiple asset classes.
She noted that the strategic policy direction under Governor Cardoso has begun yielding measurable macroeconomic gains, including improved stability, moderating inflation, and restored trust in the foreign exchange market.
According to figures cited during the address, headline inflation eased slightly from 15.93 per cent in May to 15.91 per cent in June 2026, accompanied by a slowdown in both food and core inflation. This trend was attributed to disciplined monetary tightening measures, the unification of exchange rates, and enhanced market transparency.
Addressing local currency dynamics, Mrs. Sidi Ali noted that the naira has maintained a steady trajectory, with the spread between the official exchange rate and the Bureau de Change segment narrowing to below two per cent. She described the development as clear proof of structural stability within the foreign exchange market.
The CBN official also outlined major policy initiatives executed over the past 34 months, including banking sector recapitalisation, the launch of the non-resident Bank Verification Number (BVN), the B-Match foreign exchange trading platform, the Nigeria Payments System Vision 2028, and the introduction of the Nigerian Overnight Financing Rate benchmark.
She stated that the apex bank remains committed to maintaining price stability while implementing reforms designed to encourage investment, deepen financial markets, and support sustainable economic expansion.
Speaking earlier at the event, the Branch Controller of the CBN Gombe Branch, Mr. Yunusa Buba Mubi, described the CBN Fair as a critical annual public engagement framework created to educate citizens on central bank policies while gathering direct feedback from regional stakeholders. He urged participants to take full advantage of the sessions to deepen their understanding of how apex bank initiatives affect daily economic life.
