FG to Harmonize FCT Tax Administration to Stop Multiple Taxation
By Patience Ikpeme
The Federal Government has commenced a review of plans to harmonize tax administration within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to eliminate multiple taxation and drive infrastructure development.
The initiative follows a bilateral meeting between the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Taiwo Oyedele, and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Mr. Nyesom Wike, in Abuja.
In a statement released on Sunday, Mr. Oyedele explained that the structural shift in tax collection aims to create a more efficient fiscal environment while boosting the territory’s internal revenue. According to the Finance Minister, the synchronization of revenue collection aligns closely with the provisions of the new tax reform law.
“The two Ministers reviewed plans to harmonise tax administration within the FCT,” Mr. Oyedele said, noting that the strategy will eliminate “multiple taxation while optimising revenue generation in line with the new tax reform law, to accelerate development across the Territory.”
Beyond tax harmonization, the discussions between the two cabinet members focused heavily on funding the ongoing transformation of the nation’s capital. Mr. Oyedele stated that the meeting “centred on strengthening collaboration to advance the FCT’s infrastructure renewal agenda.”
The Finance Minister also applauded the current pace of work across the capital city, offering “particular commendation for the FCT Minister’s focus on completing previously abandoned projects to unlock value for residents.”
The collaboration marks a concerted effort by the federal government to bridge fiscal policy with visible urban development, ensuring that tax revenues directly support the completion of critical public utilities and roads across the FCT.
