…NLC Hails Facility as Game-Changer

Dangote Petroleum Refinery has announced a N30 reduction in the ex-depot (gantry) price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), bringing the price down from N850 to N820 per litre. The new pricing took effect on August 12, 2025.

In a statement, Anthony Chiejina, Group Chief Branding and Communications Officer, said the move reflects the company’s commitment to supporting Nigeria’s economic growth and easing the burden on consumers.

“As part of our unwavering commitment to national development, Dangote Petroleum Refinery assures the public of a consistent and uninterrupted supply of petroleum products,” Chiejina stated.

The refinery also disclosed plans to begin the phased deployment of 4,000 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered trucks for fuel distribution nationwide, starting August 15, 2025. According to the company, the introduction of CNG-powered trucks aligns with its broader strategy to promote cleaner energy solutions and improve efficiency in product delivery.

Industry analysts see the price adjustment as a significant development in the downstream oil sector, particularly at a time when Nigerians are grappling with high transportation and living costs. The deployment of CNG-powered trucks is also expected to cut logistics costs and reduce carbon emissions in line with global energy transition goals.

The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has been a major player in the supply of refined petroleum products to the Nigerian market, contributing to energy security and import substitution efforts.

Also, the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has hailed the refinery as a transformative national asset, describing it as a critical step towards bridging Nigeria’s fuel supply gap, boosting employment, and restoring public confidence in the country’s industrial capabilities.

Speaking during a tour of the refinery and Dangote Fertiliser Limited, the Chairman of the NLC Lagos State Council, Comrade Funmi Sessi, led a delegation of executive members to inspect the facilities. She commended the scale and strategic significance of the Dangote Group’s investments, noting that they are delivering tangible benefits to the Nigerian people.

“Today, we have seen the massive Dangote Refinery project, as well as the fertiliser plant. We have also observed some of Dangote’s other investments in this axis. It is truly enormous and highly impressive,” Sessi said. “I believe what we have seen is a clear effort to bridge the gap in the availability of essential products in the country and to create job opportunities for Nigerians and others, as well as industrialise the country.”

The NLC noted that petrol prices skyrocketed following the removal of fuel subsidies by the Federal Government but credited Dangote’s entry into the market with stabilising costs.

“It wasn’t until Dangote came into the picture that we started seeing some relief. His intervention significantly crashed the escalated prices of PMS and other refined products. That’s a clear demonstration of private sector leadership,” Sessi remarked.

The union urged the Federal Government to prioritise the sale of crude oil to the Dangote Refinery in naira rather than dollars, stressing that forcing the company to import crude or pay in foreign currency undermines the potential for lower fuel prices.

“This country has crude oil in abundance. So why is Dangote still being made to import crude or pay for it in hard currency?” the NLC queried. “If the government is truly committed to reducing fuel prices and supporting local refining, it must sell crude oil to Dangote in naira.”

Sessi said local currency transactions for crude supply would cut operational costs and sustain lower prices for consumers. She also commended the refinery’s daily capacity of 650,000 barrels, which she said is enough to meet Nigeria’s needs and supply the West African sub-region.

The NLC also praised the refinery’s production of Euro 5-compliant petrol with reduced sulphur content, aligning with international environmental standards and strengthening Nigeria’s standing in the global petroleum market. In addition, the union urged the government to leverage the Dangote Group’s fertiliser production capacity — already exporting to other countries — to enhance food security and reduce dependence on imported agricultural inputs.

Vice President, Oil and Gas, Dangote Industries Limited, Devakumar Edwin, said the deployment of 4,000 CNG-powered trucks is designed to make the benefits of domestic refining fully available to Nigerians.

“The deployment of these 4,000 CNG-powered trucks will help us pass down the benefits of domestic refining and the reduction in product prices to consumers,” Edwin said. “The aim is to support logistics and make distribution more efficient, not to displace any existing players in the sector.”

He explained that using CNG-powered trucks will lower transportation costs — a major component of pump prices — and reduce environmental impact. Edwin also noted that Dangote’s investments have historically stimulated competition in key sectors, pointing to cement and sugar as examples where other major players followed the group’s lead.

According to Edwin, the refinery is not only addressing Nigeria’s reliance on imported refined products but also setting a benchmark for a competitive and sustainable refining industry. He added that the Dangote Group has developed a large pool of skilled Nigerian engineers, scientists, and technicians, many of whom now work globally.

Edwin assured the labour delegation of the company’s commitment to human capital development, staff welfare, and national progress. “Aliko Dangote is a patriotic Nigerian fully dedicated to the nation’s growth,” he said.
