FIRS Engages Media to Enhance Tax Understanding and Compliance
By Patience Ikpeme
The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has taken steps towards improving public understanding of tax policy and reforms by engaging the media in a sensitization programme.
The initiative, held in Abuja, aims to foster voluntary compliance among Nigerian taxpayers and promote transparency in tax matters.
In her address, Arabinrin Aderonke Atoyebi, Technical Assistant to the Executive Chairman of FIRS, noted that the programme’s objective is to provide clarity on tax policies, initiatives, and data that informs them.
This she said will enable the media to communicate tax matters more effectively to the public. She spoke about the importance of collaboration between the media and tax authorities in advancing public engagement, awareness, and accountability.
Atoyebi discussed the critical role of the media in the North Central region, which is rich in diversity and resources but faces developmental challenges. She encouraged open dialogue, critical questioning, and deeper collaboration between the media and tax authorities.
In his address, Dr. Abdullahi Ismaila, Director of Communication and Liaison Department, discussed the importance of data in tax matters. He noted that data should not be limited to statistics alone but should include qualitative data that provides context and depth. He stressed the need for responsible handling and analysis of data to ensure accuracy.
Dr. Ismaila pointed out that tax language is often complex and inaccessible, and suggested a communication approach that breaks down tax terms into simpler language. This, he said, will make tax messages more relatable and productive for everyday Nigerians.
On the issue of trust deficit, Dr. Ismaila observed that citizens often mistrust government due to perceived inefficiencies. He pleaded with the media to balance critique with reportage of progress and reforms. He also urged media professionals to consult data, seek clarifications, and maintain ethical standards before publishing tax-related information.
By engaging the media, the FIRS aims to promote a better understanding of tax policies and reforms, ultimately enhancing voluntary compliance among Nigerian taxpayers.
