Fed Govt Approves Consequential Salary Adjustments
By Patience Ikpeme
Just a week after its formation, the Committee on Consequential Adjustment in Salaries Arising from the National Minimum Wage Act, 2024, has reached an agreement on the necessary salary adjustments to accompany the implementation of the new minimum wage.
The committee, chaired by the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Mrs. Didi Esther Walson-Jack, announced the agreed-upon adjustments on Friday. These adjustments will apply to employees in the Consolidated Public Service Salary Structure (CONPSS), which covers staff in federal ministries, extra-ministerial offices, and agencies.
According to the committee, the following percentage increases will be implemented for different CONPSS levels: CONPSS 01-06,– 80.81% – 64.73%; CONPSS 07-14—45.59% – 19.35% and CONPSS 15-17— 14.35% – 4.41%.
The National Salaries Income and Wages Commission (NSIWC) will now generate appropriate salary templates for other consolidated salary structures to ensure consistent implementation.
The committee also agreed that the effective date for these adjustments should be July 29, 2024. Additionally, the existing wage award issued through NSIWC Circular SWC.94T33 on October 19, 2023, will continue to be paid until July 28, 2024.
To mitigate the impact of recent fuel price increases on federal workers, the Federal Government will take measures such as tax waivers and other incentives.
The NSIWC, in collaboration with other stakeholders, will monitor the implementation of these salary adjustments to ensure compliance with the provisions of the National Minimum Wage Act, 2024.
The committee, comprising 16 members from the federal government and trade unions, conducted four meetings to carefully consider the economic situation, the government’s ability to sustain the salary adjustments, and the potential effects on other employers.
