Yobe state embraces CPS, moves from DBS

As a part of ongoing efforts to ensure a stable and sustainable pension system for state employees, Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State has pledged his administration’s commitment to transition to the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) in Yobe State.
Governor Buni expressed his intentions while discussing the implementation of the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) in Yobe State with Ms. Omolola Oloworaran, the Director General of the National Pension Commission (PenCom), in Abuja.
The Governor noted that “the adoption of the CPS would not only provide long-term benefits but also address issues related to pension arrears and past service liabilities”.
He explained that this engagement is focused on identifying key steps needed to transition from the Defined Benefits Scheme (DBS), currently used in Yobe State, to the more sustainable Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS).
This discussion, he said is vital for securing financial stability for retirees and aligning the state’s pension system with national standards.
The governor further stressed the need for sensitisation programmes to ensure that all stakeholders understand the scheme’s benefits and operational framework , He acknowledged the importance of the CPS as a part of ongoing efforts to ensure a stable and sustainable pension system for state employees.
Governor Buni assured his administration’s readiness to implement the CPS by enacting a robust pension law and setting up necessary structures. He also committed to pre-retirement training programmes for civil servants.
Ms. Oloworaran praised the Governor’s proactive approach, particularly in clearing pension arrears, and pledged PenCom’s technical support for a smooth CPS adoption in Yobe State.
