It was a moment of joy and heartfelt tributes on Easter Sunday, April 20, 2025, as veteran journalist, Sir Tony Tagbo Obiechina, marked his 70th birthday in Abuja. The day, which coincided with Christ’s resurrection, brought together family members, close friends, and prominent personalities in a thanksgiving celebration that honoured a life deeply devoted to journalism, family, and faith.
The celebrant, unaware of the elaborate plans, was visibly surprised as his family—led by his wife, Lady (Lolo) Grace Obiechina—successfully kept the event a secret until the moment of unveiling. What followed was an outpouring of admiration for a man whose professional and personal life had left enduring marks on many.
A Thanksgiving Mass held at the Twelve Apostles Catholic Church, Abuja, set the tone for the day. In attendance were fellow Knights of St Mulumba, business leaders, journalists, and well-wishers who came from near and far to share in the joyful occasion.
Among those who paid glowing tributes was Sir Gabriel Ugamah, Worthy Grand Knight of the Knights of St Mulumba, Wuse Sub Council. He described Sir Obiechina as a man of precision, honesty, discipline, and clear purpose. According to Sir Ugamah, the celebrant has always been driven by vision and a strong sense of duty, qualities that stood him out in his career and community engagements.
The high point of the day came during the mini reception where Lady Grace Obiechina took guests through the life journey of her husband. She recounted his roots from Umukabia village in Amawbia, Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State. Born to the late Mr. Charles and Mrs. Victoria Obiechina, young Tony’s educational journey took him from nursery to primary and secondary education, culminating in a Bachelor of Science degree in Mass Communication from the Institute of Journalism.
His career in journalism took off in the 1980s with the Daily Times Newspapers. From there, he moved to the Nigerian Tribune and later to Post Express, where he served as Bureau Chief in Abuja. His competence eventually caught the attention of the Israeli Embassy in Nigeria, which brought him on board as its official spokesperson—a position he held with distinction until his retirement in 2017.
Lady Grace described her husband in deeply affectionate terms, calling him a man of discipline and deep moral conviction. She spoke of his punctuality, kindness, humility, and spiritual devotion. Known also for his strict personal ethics, she highlighted that he has never had a taste for alcohol—a trait symbolic of his lifestyle choices grounded in principle and responsibility.
The couple, married since 1988, have raised children and now enjoy the company of grandchildren. According to family and friends, the values of Sir Tony continue to resonate in the lives of those closest to him, especially the younger generation.
As the birthday celebration drew to a close, the atmosphere was filled with prayers and goodwill. Guests joined in asking for God’s continued protection and long life for Sir Obiechina, with many echoing the sentiment that he still has much to offer through his wisdom and experience.
Sir Tony Obiechina’s 70th birthday was not only a personal milestone—it became a gathering of stories, reflections, and expressions of love for a man whose life has been guided by integrity, purpose, and unwavering commitment to truth.
