By Patience Ikpeme
Unity Bank Plc has called for comprehensive policy action to dismantle the structures that enable gender-based violence in Nigeria. This call came during the premiere of the film BECKMA, which highlights issues of gender-based violence and aims to drive positive change in society.
Unity Bank’s Managing Director, Mrs. Tomi Somefun, expressed the bank’s commitment to partnering with the movie premiere and using its brand influence to bring sustainability and gender equality to the forefront.
Somefun, represented by Unity Bank’s Group Head of Compliance, Mrs. Patricia Ahunanya, cited a recent UNDP study revealing that “9 percent of women aged 15 to 49 had suffered sexual assault at least once in their lifetime and 31% had experienced physical violence.”
She emphasized that addressing gender-based violence requires collective action, stating, “It is not just a women’s issue, but a societal ill that demands our collective attention. We must advocate for comprehensive policy actions that will dismantle the structures enabling these atrocities.”
Somefun urged policymakers to enact stricter laws with harsher punishments for perpetrators. She also called for homes and organizations to be catalysts for change, inspiring others to follow suit.
Commending ARDA Development Communications Inc. for their initiatives promoting gender equality and empowerment, Somefun pledged Unity Bank’s continued support for sustainable projects and further collaboration in eliminating gender-based violence.
This initiative by Unity Bank demonstrates its commitment to social responsibility and its belief in creating a more equitable society. By raising awareness and advocating for policy action, Unity Bank plays a crucial role in addressing the issue of gender-based violence in Nigeria.
