Senate Confirms Zacchaeus Adedeji as FIRS Chairman
By Patience Ikpeme
The Senate has confirmed Zacchaeus Adedeji as the substantive chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS).
This Senate decision was reached during a Senate plenary session in Abuja yesterday.
Adedeji’s confirmation was achieved with the majority of senators supporting his nomination following a thorough screening process.
Before his confirmation, Adedeji outlined his vision for the FIRS, emphasizing the need to enhance the organization’s data mining capabilities to facilitate informed tax decisions.
He identified a deficiency in data regarding the financial activities of both local and foreign companies operating within Nigeria as a source of revenue leakage.
According to Adedeji, the FIRS is “committed to enhancing our data mining capacity and developing the necessary data to guide our tax-related decisions.”
Furthermore, he pledged to conduct a comprehensive review of the Federal Government’s Tax Credit Scheme, which grants certain corporations tax incentives in exchange for their contributions to infrastructure development.
This reassessment aims to ensure fairness and effectiveness in the utilization of this scheme.
