The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the resilience of Nigeria’s capital market while promoting investor education, enforcing protective regulations against fraud, and encouraging responsible investment practices.
This pledge comes as the SEC prepares to commemorate the Seventh World Investor Week (WIW), an annual global initiative spearheaded by the International Organization of Securities Commissions (IOSCO) to raise financial literacy among the general public.
In collaboration with the Financial Literacy Technical Committee (FLTC), the SEC announced that it will join the global community in observing WIW from Monday, November 20th to Friday, November 24th, 2023.
This year’s WIW campaign focuses on the theme “Investor Resilience, Crypto Assets, and Sustainable Finance,” reflecting IOSCO’s recognition of the prevailing global market conditions.
As part of its WIW commemoration activities, the SEC, in collaboration with key stakeholders, will host a webinar titled “Crypto Assets in the Context of Investor Education and Protection.” The webinar will feature expert insights on crypto assets, investor protection, and public policy implications, while also examining the potential pitfalls for Nigeria.
The SEC further highlighted the growing trend among retail investors to opt for investment strategies that align with environmental sustainability. This shift is driven by the increasing attention paid to the advantages, challenges, and regulatory recommendations associated with sustainable investments.
World Investor Week serves as a valuable platform for the SEC to reinforce its commitment to investor protection and financial literacy, emphasizing the importance of informed decision-making in the capital market. The SEC’s participation in WIW underscores its dedication to fostering a resilient and sustainable investment landscape in Nigeria.
