RMAFC Advocates for Enhanced Role of Traditional Rulers in Governance
By Patience Ikpeme
The Revenue Allocation Mobilization and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) has emphasized the need to recognize the crucial role of traditional rulers in Nigerian society and empower them to perform their duties effectively.
The Commission has also called for a more transparent and accountable mechanism for allocating the 5% of local government allocations designated for traditional councils.
During a courtesy visit by traditional rulers from Nasarawa State, led by His Royal Highness Abdullahi Amegwa, the Osana of Keana, the RMAFC Chairman, Mohamed Bello Shehu, highlighted the invaluable contributions of traditional rulers as custodians of culture, tradition, and development.
Shehu acknowledged the significant role traditional rulers have played in fostering stability and progress in Nigeria. He expressed regret over the shortcomings of the 1976 Local Government reforms and the 1999 Constitution in adequately recognizing and empowering traditional rulers.
He expressed hope that the ongoing constitutional review process would address these issues and provide a more prominent role for traditional rulers.
The traditional rulers from Nasarawa State, led by Dr. Samson Gamu Yare, the Chun Mada of Akwanga, presented their request for the 5% allocation to traditional councils to be deducted from the source and allocated directly to the respective rulers. They cited the decline in this allocation over time and the need for a more transparent and accountable disbursement process.
The royal fathers commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his efforts in advocating for the financial autonomy of local governments, as enshrined in the Nigerian Constitution. They also congratulated the RMAFC Chairman and members for their appointment to this important role.
During the meeting, RMAFC members and directors discussed the need for a clear policy on the deduction and allocation of the 5% entitlement to traditional councils.
Following extensive deliberations, the royal fathers were advised to submit a formal letter to the Presidential Committee on Local Government Autonomy, copying the RMAFC for actionable recommendations.
