Power Probe Hits Snag: Generator Company Faces Charges
By Patience Ikpeme
Nigeria’s consumer protection agency, the FCCPC, is taking action against a generator company, Mikano International Limited, for allegedly obstructing an investigation into the generator industry.
Back in December 2022, a court order gave the FCCPC the power to search the premises of several generator companies. This happened because the FCCPC had reason to believe some companies might be engaging in unfair practices that hurt consumers.
The FCCPC takes the issue of electricity very seriously, considering both the main power grid and alternative sources like generators. Affordable and reliable power is crucial for businesses and households, especially small businesses and those struggling financially. The FCCPC is determined to prevent any practices that exploit consumers in this vital sector.
The investigation is still ongoing. The FCCPC has met with high-level government officials and gathered evidence from companies involved.
On March 8th, 2024, the FCCPC filed criminal charges against Mikano specifically. The FCCPC believes Mikano’s actions during and after the search warrant execution obstructed a lawful investigation. The charges also allege Mikano failed to cooperate with legitimate requests, hindering the investigation.
The FCCPC emphasizes the importance of companies complying with the law and being transparent during investigations. This is essential for a stable economy, a fair market, and ultimately, protecting Nigerian consumers.
