Number of active mobile subscribers grows to 220.7mn

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has revealed that there are approximately 220.716 million active mobile subscriptions as of August 2023. During the same period, teledensity reached 115.63% and, there are 159.035 million active internet subscribers, with broadband penetration at 45.57%.
Executive Vice Chairman, Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Prof Umar Danbatta, disclosed these at the NCC Day during the 18th Abuja International Trade Fair organised by the Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry, at the Trade Fair Complex along Airport Road, Abuja.
Prof Umar Danbatta, acknowledged the importance of sustainable financing and taxation in the telecommunications industry.
Recognizing the vital role telecommunications play in driving economic growth and innovation, Danbatta emphasized the need to ensure that telecommunication companies are not overwhelmed with excessive taxes and levies.
Represented by Umar Alkasim, the Director of Consumer Affairs, Danbatta commended the theme of the trade fair, stating that it aligns with the current taxation challenges faced in the country. He stressed that the telecom sector is one of the fastest-growing industries, creating numerous job opportunities, and therefore, it should not be burdened by taxes that hinder its growth and development.
Furthermore, Danbatta expressed his satisfaction with the deployment of Fifth Generation (5G) Technology across Nigeria. He revealed that several licensees have already begun operations with the installation of infrastructures to enhance their services. Highlighting the benefits of 5G, including improved connection speed, mobility, capacity, and low-latency capabilities, he stated that the commercial launch of 5G networks has commenced in various cities throughout the country.
He said following such developments in the industry, it had become imperative for the Commission to ensure that telecommunication companies are not over burdened with taxes and levies.
