Nigeria Signs $3.3bn Contract with China

The Federal Government of Nigeria has signed a $3.3 billion contract with China to boost the country’s industrial sector output and create more employment opportunities.
The contract will focus on the development of the Brass Industrial Park and Methanol Complex, a project that is expected to significantly increase Nigeria’s industrial output and generate important employment opportunities.
The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, made this disclosure during the inaugural China-Nigeria Economic Cooperation and Trade Conference, which took place alongside the 2024 Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) in China.
Edun declared that this signals a new era of economic cooperation between Nigeria and China, emphasizing their commitment to deepening economic cooperation and building stronger bilateral ties.
He highlighted the importance of infrastructure development, a key priority for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, and stressed the need to create a business-friendly environment to attract more investment, especially in crucial sectors like infrastructure, energy, and industry.
The Minister also emphasized the significance of South-South cooperation in Nigeria’s sustainable development goals and chaired discussions that focused on critical areas of collaboration between the two nations.
Infrastructure development, a cornerstone of the China-Nigeria partnership, was a major topic of conversation. Both countries reiterated their dedication to joint infrastructure projects, including roads, bridges, and energy systems, aimed at accelerating industrialization and driving long-term economic growth in Nigeria.
Financial and security cooperation were also key aspects of the discussions, with both nations agreeing to enhance intelligence sharing to combat money laundering and financial crimes. This is an important step towards ensuring a secure and transparent financial environment, laying the foundation for continued economic collaboration.
The Minister stressed the importance of leveraging domestic resources and international partnerships, particularly with China, to ensure that these collaborations bring tangible benefits to the Nigerian people, aligning with the president’s economic reforms.
