…Country Ready for 5G and Beyond
By Patience Ikpeme
At the recent World Radiocommunication Conference 2023 (WRC-23), Nigeria joined hands with the international community to sign the Final Act, a testament to the collective effort in shaping the future of telecommunications. This landmark signing paves the way for increased connectivity, technological advancements, and equitable access to space-based resources.
Dr. Bosun Tijani, Nigeria’s Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, led the country’s delegation, which comprised a team of experts from various entities including the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), and Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited (NigComSat Ltd).
One of the key wins for Nigeria is the allocation of new spectrum resources for International Mobile Telecommunications (IMT). This translates to enhanced broadband connectivity, unlocking the potential for widespread deployment of 4G and 5G technologies, even paving the path for future advancements like 6G.
Furthermore, the conference identified critical frequencies for non-geostationary satellite services, allowing for high-speed broadband on airplanes, ships, trains, and vehicles. This proves immensely vital for disaster response situations where terrestrial communication infrastructure is compromised.
Beyond immediate benefits, the WRC-23 also addressed concerns regarding interference between ship and aircraft communication systems in international airspace and waters. The updated Radio Regulations establish clear guidelines to ensure seamless communication under any circumstance.
Dr. Tijani commended the delegation for their commitment, emphasizing the collective benefit of their efforts for Nigeria’s future. He further encouraged proactive preparation for future conferences, advocating for continuous research and inter-agency collaboration to safeguard national interests.
Dr. Aminu Maida, Executive Vice Chairman of the NCC, echoed the conference’s significance for Nigeria. He highlighted the impact on stakeholders, particularly ordinary Nigerians, through improved service quality and bridging the digital divide in rural areas.
Maida emphasized the alignment of the WRC-23 outcomes with Nigeria’s long-term objectives, including the expansion of broadband connectivity, fostering the transition to 5G and beyond, and ultimately ensuring equitable access to technological advancements for all citizens.
The signing of the WRC-23 Final Act marks a crucial step for Nigeria in the global telecommunications race. With secured spectrum resources, robust regulatory frameworks, and a dedicated team focused on continuous improvement, the country is well-positioned to embrace the opportunities of the 5G era and beyond, unlocking a future of seamless connectivity, innovation, and inclusive growth.
