Nigeria-China Economic Partnership: Focus on Agriculture and Infrastructure
By Patience Ikpeme
Nigeria and China have expressed their commitment to strengthening their economic partnership, particularly in the areas of agriculture and infrastructure investment.
The agreement was reached during a courtesy visit by a representative of the China Africa Economic and Trade Promotion Council (CAETPC) to Nigeria’s Minister of Budget and National Planning, Senator Abubakar Atiku Bagudu.
Senator Bagudu highlighted the potential for mutual learning and growth between the two nations, emphasizing the various investment opportunities in Nigeria. He suggested that collaboration in agriculture could serve as a foundation for Chinese companies to invest in infrastructure projects as well.
In response, Li Zhensheng, the CAETPC representative, echoed the sentiment of a mutual economic relationship between China and Nigeria. He noted the shared experiences and vast potential for collaboration in sectors such as agriculture, infrastructure, services, and energy.
“Our visit aims to share ideas and promote cooperation between China and Nigeria in these key areas,” Li Zhensheng stated. “Nigeria’s vast land resources hold immense potential for agricultural modernization. We believe cooperation can propel Nigeria’s agricultural sector to the next level.”
Li also emphasized the role of the CAETPC as a bridge between the Nigerian and Chinese governments, facilitating smooth project coordination and implementation.
The CAETPC, well-known for its efforts in promoting trade cooperation between China and Africa, appears to be a vital player in fostering this potential economic partnership.
The success of this collaboration will depend on identifying and executing projects that are mutually beneficial, ultimately driving agricultural development and strengthening Nigeria’s infrastructure.
