NCC Suspends Issuance of Select Licences to Review Market Dynamics
By Patience Ikpeme
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has announced a temporary suspension on the issuance of new licences in three key categories: Interconnect Exchange Licence, Mobile Virtual Network Operator Licence, and Value Added Service Aggregator Licence.
This decision, effective from May 17, 2024, aims to allow the Commission to undertake a comprehensive review of several critical factors impacting these areas.
In a statement released to stakeholders, the NCC emphasized that this measure is in line with its mandate under the Nigerian Communications Act (NCA) 2003, which includes the authority to grant and renew licences, promote fair competition, and develop the communications industry.
“This temporary suspension is necessary to enable the Commission to conduct a thorough review of several key areas within these categories, including the current level of competition, market saturation, and current market dynamics,” the statement read.
The Commission assured the public and stakeholders that applications submitted before the commencement of the suspension will still be considered on their merits. “This is without prejudice to pending applications before the Commission which will be considered on their merits,” the NCC clarified.
During this period, the NCC will not accept new applications for the specified licences. The decision underscores the Commission’s commitment to ensuring a balanced and competitive communications market.
Stakeholders with enquiries or seeking clarifications regarding the suspension are encouraged to contact the Commission at licensing@ncc.gov.ng.
The NCC’s move reflects its proactive approach in regulating the telecommunications sector to adapt to evolving market conditions and to maintain a healthy competitive environment.
