NCC Approves Telecom Tariff Adjustments, Capping Increase at 50%

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has announced its approval for tariff adjustments by telecom operators in response to prevailing market conditions.

This decision, following extensive consultations with stakeholders, allows for a maximum increase of 50% in current tariffs, a figure lower than the over 100% increase initially requested by some operators.

This move is authorized under Section 108 of the Nigerian Communications Act, 2003, which grants the NCC the authority to regulate and approve tariff rates and charges by telecommunications operators. The approved adjustments will adhere to the tariff bands stipulated in the 2013 NCC Cost Study and will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis, as per the Commission’s standard practice for tariff reviews. Furthermore, implementation will strictly follow the recently issued NCC Guidance on Tariff Simplification, 2024.

Telecom operators have faced escalating operational costs while maintaining static tariff rates since 2013. This approved adjustment aims to bridge the significant gap between operational expenses and current tariffs while ensuring the continued delivery of quality services to consumers. By enabling operators to invest in infrastructure and innovation, these adjustments are expected to ultimately benefit consumers through improved network quality, enhanced customer service, and greater coverage.

The NCC acknowledges the potential impact of tariff adjustments on Nigerian households and businesses. To mitigate these concerns, the Commission has mandated that operators implement these adjustments transparently and fairly. Operators are required to educate the public about the new rates and demonstrate measurable improvements in service delivery to justify the price increases.

Beyond consumer protection, the NCC’s decision aims to ensure the long-term sustainability of the telecommunications industry. This includes supporting indigenous vendors and suppliers who play a crucial role in the telecommunications ecosystem.

The NCC recognizes the importance of fostering a resilient, innovative, and inclusive telecommunications sector. As the regulator, the Commission will continue to engage with all stakeholders – consumers, operators, and industry players – to create a balanced telecommunications environment that benefits all. This approach aims to protect consumers, support operators, and sustain the ecosystem that drives connectivity across the nation.
