The National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) on Tuesday, February 11, 2025, took their Insurance Literacy and Consumer Protection Campaign to Wuse Market, Abuja.
The campaign aimed to educate traders and the general public on the importance of insurance in protecting businesses and livelihoods.

Tagged “Insurance Literacy and Consumer Protection Campaign: A UNDP (Nigeria) Project 2025,” the initiative focused on promoting financial resilience and making insurance accessible to more Nigerians as a tool for reducing poverty. UNDP representative, Mrs. Bukola Ifemade, welcomed participants and appreciated stakeholders for their commitment to the cause.
The event provided traders with insights into different types of insurance policies that could safeguard their businesses and families. Discussions covered Fire and Special Perils Insurance, which compensates traders for losses due to fire, storms, floods, and damage from vehicles or animals.

The session also highlighted Goods in Transit Insurance, which ensures financial compensation for losses during transportation, and Accident Insurance, which provides financial support in cases of injury or death from accidents. Additionally, Life Insurance was emphasized as a crucial policy for securing the financial future of dependents in the event of an untimely death.
The Commissioner for Insurance, Mr. Olusegun Ayo Omosehin, represented by Mr. Kenneth Aroh, reaffirmed NAICOM’s commitment to protecting policyholders and regulating the insurance sector. He urged traders to embrace insurance as a safety net against unforeseen risks.
Stakeholders such as the Nigerian Council of Registered Insurance Brokers (NCRIB) and the Nigerian Insurers Association (NIA) also participated in the campaign. They provided guidance on purchasing genuine insurance policies and verifying their authenticity. Mrs. Toyin Akinmoya, representing the NIA, explained that traders could check the validity of an insurance policy by visiting www.niip.ng or www.askiid.ng.
The event concluded with a group photograph and the distribution of awareness materials, including face caps, t-shirts, and flyers, to reinforce the message of insurance education.
