The National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) has entered a strategic engagement with a high-level delegation from the Council of Bureaux of the ECOWAS Brown Card Insurance Scheme to transform the landscape of cross-border motor insurance in West Africa.
The meeting, which gathered top regulatory officials and regional stakeholders, focused on creating a more robust framework to ensure insurance remains a reliable tool for integration within the sub-region.
By aligning operational priorities, the two bodies aim to make the Brown Card scheme more accessible and efficient for motorists traveling across West African borders.
According to a statement regarding the partnership, the collaboration is intended to support the broader goals of the ECOWAS treaty, particularly in the areas of trade, free movement, and economic stability.
The initiative seeks to remove existing bottlenecks that hinder seamless travel and the prompt settlement of third-party insurance claims for accidents occurring outside a motorist’s home country.
“This engagement brings together key stakeholders united by a shared vision to make cross-border motor insurance more efficient, reliable, and accessible throughout West Africa,” the commission noted.
The partnership is expected to bridge the gap between national insurance markets, paving the way for a regional framework that provides a safety net for road users while fostering trust among member states. By strengthening these ties, NAICOM and the Council of Bureaux are positioning the insurance sector as a critical driver of regional economic integration.
“By strengthening partnerships and aligning priorities, NAICOM and the Council of Bureaux are paving the way for a more seamless regional insurance framework that supports trade, travel, and economic integration across the sub-region,” the statement added.
