NAICOM and Police Join Forces to Enforce Compulsory Insurance Nationwide
By Patience Ikpeme
The National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) and the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) have launched a joint committee to enforce compulsory insurance laws across the country.
This collaborative effort follows the Inspector General of Police’s recent announcement regarding the enforcement of motor vehicle insurance, effective February 1, 2025. The inaugural meeting of the joint committee took place on January 30, 2025, at NAICOM’s headquarters in Abuja.
A statement from the NAICOM said the newly formed committee has several key objectives, including developing and implementing strategies for enforcing compulsory insurances, ensuring compliance with compulsory insurance policies as mandated by the Insurance Act and other related laws, fostering synergy and collaboration between NAICOM and the NPF, and providing training and capacity-building programs for personnel of both organizations on compulsory insurances.
The committee’s scope of work is comprehensive, encompassing the evaluation of existing challenges in enforcing compulsory insurances and proposing solutions, developing protocols for joint enforcement operations, recommending policy reforms to strengthen insurance compliance, undertaking public sensitization programs on compulsory insurances, and developing training programs for personnel of both organizations. The inauguration of this joint committee signifies a major step towards ensuring that all vehicle owners comply with compulsory insurance laws, ultimately promoting a safer and more secure environment for all road users.
To facilitate seamless enforcement, the Deputy Commissioner, Finance and Administration, Mr. Ekerete Ola Gam-Ikon, who represented the Commissioner for Insurance, provided the committee with several key resources. These include the Insurance Act 2003, the Inspector General’s speech on Third-Party Motor Insurance enforcement, a list of licensed insurance companies authorized to conduct motor business, and NAICOM’s USSD code *7292# for policy verification.
He also directed the committee to the websites www.askiid.org and www.niip.ng for verification of motor insurance certificates and the purchase of genuine Third-Party Motor insurance, respectively. With this joint committee now operational, NAICOM and the NPF are positioned to make a substantial impact on insurance compliance throughout Nigeria.
