The National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) have formally inaugurated a Joint Committee dedicated to the enforcement of compulsory Third-Party Motor Insurance.
This event, held at the NAICOM Headquarters in Abuja, represents a pivotal advancement in implementing the Nigerian Insurance Industry Reform Act (NIIRA) 2025 and underscores the commitment of both institutions to enhancing road safety and insurance compliance.
Mr. Olusegun Ayo Omosehin, Commissioner for Insurance, commended the FRSC for its proactive leadership in this initiative. He stated, “The collaboration between NAICOM and FRSC will ensure effective enforcement of compulsory Third-Party Motor Insurance, facilitate integration of insurance and vehicle registration databases, provide enhanced protection and prompt compensation for road accident victims, and promote increased public education on insurance obligations and consumer rights.”
Mr. Omosehin emphasized that this partnership is closely aligned with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, aimed at driving inclusive national development through strategic sector reforms. He remarked, “This initiative is a critical component of the broader reform agenda designed to safeguard citizens and promote economic growth.”
The Corps Marshal of the FRSC, Shehu Mohammed, highlighted the importance of the collaboration in advancing enforcement capabilities. He affirmed, “This partnership will significantly strengthen enforcement of compulsory motor insurance across Nigeria and improve welfare for road users. The FRSC is committed to supporting this initiative through technological integration, data sharing, and rigorous field enforcement.”
Mr. Ekerete Ola Gam-Ikon, Deputy Commissioner for Insurance, presented the Committee’s Terms of Reference, which include enforcing nationwide compliance, reducing uninsured vehicles, ensuring prompt compensation and medical support for accident victims, promoting insurance awareness, enabling real-time verification via digital systems, supporting microinsurance development, and enhancing emergency response coordination during the golden hour.
Co-chaired by senior officials from both NAICOM and FRSC, with NAICOM providing the Secretariat, the Joint Committee will coordinate field operations, public sensitization campaigns, and ongoing policy evaluation to improve compliance and consumer confidence.
Commissioner Omosehin concluded, “This partnership reflects a sustained commitment to collaboration, continuous evaluation, and innovation. Our goals are to reduce road accidents, increase insured motorists, and strengthen public trust in insurance.”
