Senator Abubakar Bagudu, Minister of Budget and Economic Planning; and others have commended President Bola Tinubu for prioritizing the 1,068-kilometer Sokoto-Badagry Superhighway.
The project was conceived over 40 years ago during President Shehu Shagari’s administration but was abandoned by succeeding administrations.
The project is expected to bring economic prosperity to the state’s citizens, particularly farmers and traders along the road’s corridor.
During the inauguration of the Kebbi section in Gulumbe,Bagudu emphasized that the project is significant as it aligns with Tinubu’s campaign commitment to be a president for all Nigerians by enhancing infrastructure across various regions of the country.
“Mr President inaugurated the Lagos-Badagry Coastal Highway in Lagos in May. Now, the Sokoto-Badagry Superhighway’s construction has started from Ilela in Sokoto State and Gulumbe in Kebbi State,” he said.
Bagudu further described president Tinubu as a visionary leader. He remarked that the superhighway’s construction demonstrated President Tinubu’s vision as a leader who chose to invest in Nigeria’s future, even amid economic difficulties.
“Despite the current economic challenges, President Bola Tinubu has insisted on investing in the future of Nigeria by implementing infrastructural projects that would guarantee sustainable and inclusive economic development,” Bagudu said.
Senator Dave Umahi, Minister of Works; pointed out the superhighway’s advantages, including enhanced security via lighting and cameras, as well as the facilitation of 68 dams for agricultural irrigation.
He noted that the Superhighway would be constructed with stone and feature a red line to benefit residents along the corridor.
Umahi also revealed that President Tinubu has instructed them to expedite construction so that some sections can be inaugurated by next year.
Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris, representing President Tinubu, described the project as a historic initiative that would benefit the economic interests of the people.
“I congratulate the people of my state on this significant road project, which will enhance our agricultural activities by facilitating the construction of more dams along the corridor,” he stated.
He also noted that the President has promised the Northwest Zone additional democratic dividends through developmental projects that will directly improve people’s lives.
