Govt, private sector collaboration needed to achieve development goals’ says FG
By Patience Ikpeme
The federal government has acknowledged the need to work together with the private sector in order to achieve development goals.
The government recognizes that its resources are decreasing, making it necessary to sustain a partnership with the private sector to advance the development agenda.
Minister of Budget and Economic Planning Senator Abubakar Bagudu highlighted the role of NGOs in addressing areas not covered by the government, such as healthcare, the environment, the economy, public policy, and support for vulnerable citizens.
Bagudu made the admission during the 30th Annual Lift Above Poverty Organization (LAPO) Development Forum in Abuja.
The government’s policy objectives he said are crucial for both state and non-state actors, and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) are encouraged to align their work with the national development plan to ensure inclusivity and non-discrimination.
The Minister also acknowledged the challenges faced by the government, including a revenue deficit, slow economic growth, rapid population growth, increasing unemployment, and high inflation.
In light of these challenges, non-governmental organizations are urged to help address these issues and cover areas where the government’s resources and capacity fall short.
The importance of non-state actors, including NGOs, in complementing government efforts to promote national and economic development is emphasized by Dr. James-Wisdom Abhulimen, the Head of Programme and Corporate Communications at LAPO, as the government cannot shoulder this responsibility alone.
