Glo, MTN Resolve Interconnect Debt Dispute

The intervention of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has prevented a potentially disruptive disconnection of Globacom subscribers from the MTN network.
An interconnect debt dispute between the two mobile network operators (MNOs) has been amicably resolved, according to a statement issued by NCC Director of Public Affairs, Reuben Mouka.
“The Commission is pleased to announce that the interconnect debt dispute between MTN and Globacom has been amicably resolved,” Mouka stated.
This comes after the NCC initially approved a phased disconnection of Globacom due to outstanding charges, sparking concerns among subscribers.
However, recognizing the potential impact on millions of users, the NCC intervened, mediating between the parties and facilitating the reconciliation process. This proactive approach prevented disruptions and ultimately led to a mutually agreeable settlement.
“Following its initial public notice, the Commission undertook further regulatory intervention to mitigate any potential disruptions to subscribers,” Mouka explained. This highlights the NCC’s commitment to protecting consumer interests and ensuring continued access to communication services.
The resolution serves as a reminder to all MNOs of the importance of adhering to license terms and conditions, particularly those related to interconnection agreements. To address future issues, the NCC announced it will be requesting regular updates and relevant records from MNOs, promoting transparency and accountability within the industry.
“The Commission reiterates that strict adherence to the terms and conditions of licenses is imperative for all MNOs,” Mouka emphasized. “We are committed to fostering a stable and compliant telecommunications ecosystem in Nigeria, and this includes addressing issues of interconnect indebtedness.”
This successful resolution demonstrates the NCC’s effectiveness in fostering a healthy and competitive telecommunications landscape in Nigeria. By proactively intervening and facilitating dialogue, the NCC has ensured continued access to essential communication services for millions of Nigerians.
