Francesca Chiejina: The Soprano Soaring to New Heights
Renowned for her radiant and versatile soprano voice, Francesca Chiejina has captured the hearts of audiences worldwide. With a voice that glints with beauty and the power to ride alongside orchestras, she has been hailed as exceptional. Her bell-like voice and megawatt smile make opera seem effortless, and she outshines them all.
But Francesca’s journey to stardom was not a straightforward one. Initially a reluctant soprano, she started as a mezzo and later sang alto. It wasn’t until she fell in love with opera at the age of 20 that she fully embraced her destiny. From there, she rapidly rose through the ranks, performing with some of the industry’s best and proving her mettle time and time again.
Francesca’s passion for music began at a young age when her father introduced her to the Musical Society of Nigeria (MUSON). While studying at the University of Michigan, she initially pursued a career in medicine. However, the call of music grew louder, and she made the bold decision to switch paths. The joy she found in singing far surpassed her interest in biology labs. Taking a risk, she knew she could always return to medicine if necessary, but she didn’t want to let the opportunity to pursue her passion pass her by.
Now, twelve years later, Francesca is riding the wave of success. Both medicine and music have therapeutic qualities, but she found greater fulfillment in healing distressed minds and inspiring hope through her voice. Despite initial reservations, her parents have come to understand and appreciate her decision. Francesca’s gift not only provides for her financially but also brings her immeasurable joy and contentment.
Francesca’s talent has taken her around the world, studying with esteemed teachers and performing at prestigious venues. She has worked with Martha Sheil and James Patterson at the University of Michigan and Sue McCulloch at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. As a graduate of the Jette Parker Young Artists Programme at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, she has hobnobbed with the greatest names in classical music.
Her performances on the concert platform have garnered critical acclaim. From singing Berg’s Seven Early Songs at the BBC Proms to Handel’s Messiah at the Royal Albert Hall, Francesca’s voice captivates audiences and leaves a lasting impression. She has participated in masterclasses with renowned figures such as Joyce DiDonato and Felicity Lott, further honing her craft.
Despite her international success, Francesca remains grounded and connected to her Nigerian roots. She recently founded the Kobo Arts Foundation, a non-governmental organization aimed at providing scholarships to Nigerian musicians, particularly those at the MUSON School. Francesca hopes to encourage and support aspiring musicians in Nigeria, eliminating the need to leave the country to pursue classical music education.
Returning to her birthplace, Francesca reflects on her journey and continues to rediscover herself. She remains grateful for the encouragement she has received along the way and strives to give back through her foundation. With her soaring voice and enchanting performances, Francesca Chiejina is a force to be reckoned with in the world of opera, captivating audiences worldwide.
