By Patience Ikpeme
The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has taken a step towards improving taxpayer satisfaction with the launch of a new Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD) code, *829#.
This innovative initiative makes Nigeria the sixth African country to deploy such a code for simplifying tax payment processes.
The FIRS Chairman, Zacch Adedeji, unveiled the USSD code at the Revenue House in Abuja as part of the agency’s Customer Service Week celebrations.
A statement from the FIRS signed by Dare Adekanmbi, Special Adviser on Media to the FIRS chairman said the code allows taxpayers on any mobile network in Nigeria to access real-time information and services from the FIRS, including retrieving Taxpayer Identification Numbers (TINs), verifying Tax Clearance Certificates (TCCs), obtaining information on tax types and rates, locating nearby FIRS offices, and seeking general tax-related inquiries.
Adedeji emphasized the FIRS’ commitment to simplifying tax administration and making it accessible to all taxpayers, regardless of their location. He encouraged taxpayers to utilize the USSD code for their tax-related needs and experience the benefits it offers.
The *829# USSD code provides taxpayers with a convenient and efficient way to access FIRS services without the need for internet access. This technological advancement reflects the FIRS’ dedication to creating a tax system that is responsive to the needs of taxpayers.
In addition to the USSD code, the FIRS also launched the Customer Centricity Guide, a booklet outlining the agency’s policies, processes, and procedures for ensuring exceptional customer service. The guide reinforces the FIRS’ commitment to putting taxpayers at the center of its service delivery and emphasizes the importance of respect, professionalism, and efficiency in all interactions with taxpayers.
The national coordinator of Servicom, Nnenna Akajemeli, commended the FIRS for its efforts to enhance taxpayer satisfaction. She highlighted the launch of the USSD code and the customer centricity guide as significant initiatives that simplify tax administration and improve the overall taxpayer experience.
The FIRS Director of Taxpayers’ Service Department, Loveth Onanuga, noted that customer-centricity goes beyond meeting basic customer needs. It involves exceeding expectations and providing exceptional service, which aligns with the theme of the Customer Service Week.
With the launch of the *829# USSD code and the Customer Centricity Guide, the FIRS is demonstrating its commitment to providing a more efficient, transparent, and responsive tax administration system that fosters trust and voluntary participation among taxpayers.
