FIRS Gets Organizational Makeover
By Patience Ikpeme
The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) is poised for a significant transformation with the approval of a new organizational structure and the launch of a comprehensive strategic management meeting.
This two-day retreat, set to begin on Wednesday, will be officially opened by Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister for the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun.
The core theme of the retreat, “Reimagining Tax Administration for Equity and Economic Growth,” underscores the FIRS’s commitment to a modernized approach.
The newly approved organizational structure, to be unveiled by Mr. Edun, is expected to streamline operations, enhance efficiency, and foster a more taxpayer-centric environment.
A key objective of the retreat is to ensure complete alignment amongst FIRS directors regarding the strategic vision of Executive Chairman Dr. Zacch Adedeji. This internal harmonization will lay the foundation for unified action and effective implementation of the new structure.
The FIRS intends to go beyond internal restructuring. The retreat will also feature crucial discussions with external stakeholders, including government officials, professional bodies, and representatives of the organized private sector. This open dialogue aims to secure broader input and foster collaboration in shaping the FIRS’s future strategy.
Dr. Adedeji’s leadership has already set the stage for this transformation. Upon assuming office, he championed a shift towards taxpayer-centricity and revitalized the agency’s revenue-collecting capabilities. This visionary approach led to a significant overhaul of the organizational and management structures, streamlining processes and simplifying compliance for taxpayers.
The upcoming strategic management meeting marks a critical juncture for the FIRS. The unveiling of the new organizational structure, coupled with the open dialogue with stakeholders, signals a renewed commitment to modernize tax administration for greater efficiency, equity, and economic growth. This comprehensive revamp holds the potential to significantly improve the FIRS’s effectiveness and further strengthen its role in driving Nigeria’s economic development.
