FIRS Apologizes to CAN for Controversial Tax Flyer
By Patience Ikpeme
The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has issued an apology to the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) over a flyer that was posted on their social media platforms with the headline “Jesus paid your debts, not your taxes.”
The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) had expressed concern that the message denigrated Jesus Christ and detracted from his huge sacrifice for humanity.

Mr. Dare Adekanmbi, Special Adviser Media to the FIRS Chairman, cleared the air on this controversy on Tuesday in Abuja .
Adekanmbi stated that they did not put out the flyer purposely to offend anyone and that they are aware of the essence of Easter as a time to celebrate this sacrifice.

The message was meant to remind taxpayers about their civic obligation to pay taxes, but it appears some people misinterpreted it.
He emphasized that the FIRS is apologizing for any unintended offense caused and reiterates its goal as an agency responsible for collecting revenue for the wellbeing of Nigeria’s Federation without bringing down or offending any religion or faith in the country.
