The Federal Ministry of Finance has reaffirmed its commitment to lead the fight against corruption alongside other anti-graft agencies in Nigeria.
“The commemoration of this day serves as a powerful reminder to eradicate corrupt practices within the Federal Ministry of Finance and across the entire Federal Civil Service,” declared Okokon Ekanem Udo, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry. His message, delivered through Director of Special Duties Mrs. Oluwayemisi Egundebi, resonated with the event’s theme: “Engage in Transparency.”
Recognizing corruption as a “formidable adversary that thrives in the shadow of secrecy,” Udo emphasized the need for collective action to shed light on its darkness. He placed transparency at the heart of a just and accountable society, empowering citizens through technology and digital platforms to scrutinize institutions and demand accountability.
“Transparent governance builds trust between citizens and their leaders,” Udo asserted. He envisioned a society where the light of transparency exposes the roots of corruption and eradicates its harmful influence. He urged participants to embrace integrity in their personal and professional lives and instill this value in future generations.
The workshop emphasized the importance of ethical conduct and continuous learning for civil servants. The improved performance of the Federal Ministry of Finance in the latest ICPC transparency ranking, scoring 52.50%, was celebrated as a step in the right direction. Director Egundebi highlighted the workshop’s potential to foster collaboration and achieve even better results.
Obaniyi Adebayo, in his presentation titled “Public Sector Corruption: Nature and Consequences,” reminded participants that corruption extends beyond financial misappropriation, encompassing any abuse of power. He characterized it as “the worst affliction of any nation” and urged staff to avoid acts detrimental to the Ministry and the nation.
The Federal Ministry of Finance’s renewed commitment to transparency and its leadership in the fight against corruption offer a beacon of hope for a brighter future. By embracing open governance, leveraging technology, and fostering a culture of integrity, the Ministry can set a powerful example for the entire nation, paving the way for a more just and prosperous Nigeria.
