The Federal Government has launched an initiative leveraging space technology to generate an estimated $50 billion annually.

Dubbed the “Presidential Initiative on Revenue Optimization and Digitalization via Space Technology,” the initiative was unveiled in Abuja on Thursday, with RMAFC Chairman, Dr. Mohammed Bello Shehu, emphasizing the critical need for innovative revenue generation methods to support the government’s “Renewed Hope Agenda.”

He acknowledged that traditional revenue streams are no longer sufficient to meet the nation’s evolving needs, stressing the importance of exploring new opportunities for economic growth and development.

“The Renewed Hope Agenda of this administration can only be realised through the implementation of efficient and effective revenue generation methods, with the creation of new revenue streams through modern technology being a crucial requirement,” Dr. Shehu stated. He lamented the inadequacy of traditional revenue sources and called for collaborative and innovative thinking to unlock new economic potentials.

Dr. Shehu credited NARSDA with conceiving the initiative, highlighting the immense benefits other nations have derived from utilizing space technology for economic growth. He urged all stakeholders to partner with RMAFC and NARSDA on this transformative journey, emphasizing the importance of collective effort in building a prosperous and equitable nation.

NARSDA Director General, Dr. Mathew Olumide Adepoju, explained that the agency, embracing the principles of Industry 4.0, recognizes the growing importance of space science, innovation, and technology in the age of artificial intelligence and robotics. He revealed that a proposal was submitted to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to mainstream space technology to address revenue leakages and create new revenue lines.

“Our initial analysis has given us results that we can help the country generate up to $50 billion annually,” Dr. Adepoju announced. He stressed the importance of collaboration with all revenue-generating agencies to achieve this ambitious goal.

Dr. Adepoju also addressed the concerning issue of the Gulf of Guinea being labeled a “blind spot” in international forums. He stated that Nigeria’s advancements in space technology should negate this perception. He emphasized that integrating space science and technology would not only boost revenue generation but also contribute to national security.

“Our analytics and results have shown that most of the internal strife is driven by solid minerals and other resources in the country,” Dr. Adepoju explained, highlighting the potential of space technology to address these issues. He called for the support of all relevant Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to realize the Presidential Initiative and secure the nation for future generations.

Dr. Adepoju emphasized the crucial link between resource mobilization and infrastructural development, asserting that equitable distribution and better utilization of resources are essential for achieving much-needed progress.

The launch of this initiative signals a significant step towards diversifying Nigeria’s revenue base and leveraging the power of space technology for economic growth and national development.
