FG, Aig-Imoukhuede Foundation Push for Standardised Government Web Design
By Patience Ikpeme
The Federal Government, in collaboration with the Aig-Imoukhuede Foundation, is advancing efforts to implement the Nigeria Web Design Standards (NWDS) Project—an initiative aimed at creating more user-friendly, accessible, and cohesive government websites across the country.
Led by the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, the NWDS Project is part of a broader strategy to improve how citizens interact with government services online. It forms a key part of the Ministry’s agenda to deliver transparent and digitally inclusive public services.
The Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy (FMCIDE) and the Aig-Imoukhuede Foundation made this commitment during a two-day workshop held on July 18 and 19, 2025, in Abuja.
The workshop brought together digital experts, UI/UX designers, and key public sector stakeholders to define the structure, look, and functionality of government websites.
“This workshop marks a crucial step in our journey to transform how citizens experience government online. By standardising the design and functionality of public sector websites, we are laying the foundation for a more accessible, inclusive, and efficient digital government,” Dr. Tijani said.
He acknowledged the support of the Aig-Imoukhuede Foundation and noted that the NWDS aligns with broader efforts already underway within the Ministry, including the 3 Million Technical Talent (3MTT) programme aimed at training Nigerian youth in digital skills. Other ongoing initiatives involve expanding national broadband coverage, developing Artificial Intelligence and digital infrastructure strategies, and fostering global partnerships to elevate Nigeria’s status in the digital economy.
The Aig-Imoukhuede Foundation, which has been instrumental in driving digital adoption in the Nigerian public sector, is building on its previous successes. It played a pivotal role in digitising the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, which in turn inspired other Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to begin their own digital transformation programmes.
To deepen this momentum, the Foundation has signed Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) with key federal institutions including the Federal Ministry of Justice, the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, and the Federal Civil Service Commission. These agreements are geared towards expanding the reach of digitalisation across the public service.
In his opening remarks at the NWDS workshop, Chairman of the Foundation, Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede, said: “The introduction of a national standard for government websites is a bold and necessary step. It says to every Nigerian, we are one government, working together to serve you better. A standardised approach will ensure our websites are not only aesthetically aligned, but also functional, accessible, and user-centric, meeting the diverse needs of Nigerians at home and abroad.”
Both the Ministry and the Foundation have restated their commitment to creating a seamless and unified online experience for anyone seeking government information or services. The Nigeria Web Design Standards initiative is expected to play a vital role in enhancing public trust in digital governance and improving service delivery across federal platforms.
