The federal government is set to embark on a nationwide community engagement campaign to foster understanding and acceptance of the tax reform bills currently under consideration by the National Assembly.
This was disclosed by Tayo Koleosho, Chief of Staff to the Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), during a roundtable discussion in Abuja on Tuesday.
Koleosho emphasized the need to bridge the gap between the government and the public on tax matters, acknowledging widespread public skepticism surrounding taxation. He stressed that grassroots engagement is crucial to ensure citizens across the country understand the implications and benefits of the proposed reforms for Nigeria’s development.
“When Nigerians understand the content of the bill, they can trust it and become advocates for it,” Koleosho stated. He further emphasized that taxation empowers citizens to hold the government accountable for how their tax contributions are utilized.
Olufemi Olarinde, Head of Fiscal and Tax Reforms Implementation Division at FIRS,, reiterated that the tax reform bills are the culmination of extensive consultations with stakeholders nationwide. He highlighted the committee’s efforts to ensure equity and fairness in the proposed reforms.
Addressing concerns raised in the northern region, Olarinde emphasized that the reforms prioritize economic stimulation by exempting low-income earners earning below N300,000 annually. He explained that the aim is to grow the tax net by fostering a conducive environment for small businesses and individuals to thrive, ultimately increasing revenue for states.
To effectively communicate the message, the government is deploying a strategic communication framework. Moremi Ojudu, Senior Special Assistant to President Bola Tinubu for Community Engagement in the Southwest, outlined a six-month plan to take the advocacy to communities, engaging trade unions, associations, and grassroots leaders through local languages and inclusive communication channels.
Abdullahi Tanko Yakasai, Senior Special Assistant to President Bola Tinubu for Community Engagement in the Northwest, highlighted the importance of feedback mechanisms in addressing concerns and misconceptions. He assured that hotlines and online portals will be available to provide clarity and address any fears about the bill.
