The Federal Government on Sunday officially launched the construction of the 125km Benin-Asaba Expressway, a significant infrastructure project fully financed by the private sector.
The groundbreaking ceremony, held in Benin City, was led by Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
This ambitious project, a partnership between the Federal Government and Africa Plus Partners, will see the development of a modern, dual-carriage, solar-lit superhighway.
Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, emphasized the project’s significance as a milestone in infrastructure financing. He highlighted the reliance on private sector investment, stating, “This is not reliant on direct federal funding. Africa Plus Consortium, backed by credible investors, has provided the full capital commitment, demonstrating confidence in the President’s vision and the future of our economy.”
Edun further explained that this project aligns with the Tinubu administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, showcasing how strategic public-private partnerships can unlock economic growth and development. He reiterated that this model will be replicated across the nation, ensuring sustainable infrastructure development through innovative financing frameworks.
Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, described the project as a “cashless model,” signifying a shift towards private sector-led infrastructure development in Nigeria.
The Benin-Asaba Expressway project serves as a testament to the potential of private sector investment in driving critical infrastructure development in Nigeria.
