By Patience Ikpeme
There will be a panel discussion on the impact of digital culture on democracy during the launch of “Cyber Politics: Social Media, Social Demography and Voting Behaviour in Nigeria,” a book by the Nigerian Communications Commission’s Head of Media Relations, Omoniyi Ibietan.
The panel will focus on how cyber politics played out and shaped the last two general elections in Nigeria. The possible implications of cyber politics in future elections will also be x-rayed.
Published by Premium Times Books, the 460-page book, spread over 12 chapters, interrogated a critical phase in Nigeria’s democracy through its elections.
The discussion will be moderated by Chido Onumah, journalist and Coordinator of the African Centre for Information and Media Literacy.
Panelists include Majeed Dahiru, CEO of Orascom Properties; Abiodun Adeniyi, deputy dean of Baze University’s postgraduate school; and Ibietan.
The talk will focus on how cyber politics affected Nigeria’s last two general elections and its potential influence on future polls.

“Cyber Politics” analyses the 2015 presidential election and its impact on the country’s democracy. The book will be formally unveiled by Umar Danbatta, a professor, and executive vice chairman and chief executive officer of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), where Mr Ibietan works. Danbatta is also the writer of the foreword to the book.
The book, which has been praised for its insights and intellectual approach, has been available in print since June and electronic versions are on sale on platforms like Amazon.
